We were mostly taught in English but also learned French starting in grade 1 (same program they used in Ontario in Grade 4 for French) back in September 1968. We sung a lot and did lots of artwork too. They should have taught phonics and had a program to help those who were overtly shy. My shyness caused me to fail grade 1 more than once. It wasn't until I was in Ontario trying grade 1 the third time that I passed grade one, because they taught phonics and they helped me get out of my shell.
