Absolutely love Stephanie's approach! She has turned an interest in yoga into a love! Her student teacher John is equally amazing!

The approach here is holistic and fun!

My son Aidan is 11 years old. He has Cerebral Palsy and is in a wheelchair

When I first brought Aidan to the Spiral Movement Center (about 2 years ago), my goal was to get him walking. This summer, Aidan took his first, few independent steps.

Functional goal achieved. And so much more. Aidan moves more freely now. Movement brings him joy not discomfort and pain like it used to. Happiness brings improved behavior. Aidan plays games with his sister now instead of just pulling her hair.

Aidan has learned some basic yoga poses at the Center. I think he's more flexible than I am! Aidan's posture has really improved to. He was diagnosed with mild scoliosis years ago but I don't see any evidence of it now. Better posture also means improved digestion, less drooling and significantly reduced spit up.

When I brought Aidan to the Center, I had my eyes on only one goal: functional walking. Spiral Praxis education did ultimately achieve that goal AND in a more wholistic way than I ever imagined. Aidan is easier to care for now which makes our family life much more harmonious. I feel so fortunate that we found our way to the Spiral Movement Center!

I contacted Stephanie and Yuji at the beginning of my second trimester of pregnancy. I was suffering from prenatal anxiety. I had fungus growing on my back for a year, which got worse whenever my stress level was higher; and the chronic lower back pain I had suffered for seven years was getting worse as the pregnancy progressed. I had trouble laying on my back, and I experienced pain when I lay on the bed and turned from one side to the other.

My sessions were filled with Spiral Praxis bodywork techniques on relaxation through mind body reconnection; pain relief; as well as relearning proper postures and alignment for walking, sitting and lifting. At the end of my very first session, I was amazed at how efficient my lower back pain was relieved. I had being to chiropractors, physiotherapists, yoga classes in the past, and never had the feeling of getting the pain under control. And these techniques I could use both during my private sessions as well as at home. By session eight, my lower back pain was gone, and I was able to walk around confidently knowing how to adjust my postures, and using techniques to relief tension on my body. Somewhere during my first eight sessions, the fungus on my back just stopped growing.

And gradually anxiety was gone too. Instead of trying to control things I cannot control and getting stressed, I started to pay attention on how my body reacted when issues come up. When I took care of myself by look inward to my body and mind connection, I was always able to get a whole new perspective to issues that brought stress to me. At the beginning of my first few sessions, I was so afraid having to talk about anxiety. Yet we had never needed to talk about anxiety at all during my sessions. By reconnecting to my body, I became more peaceful, and was able to let go most of the tension, and live with things I cannot change in my life.

Working with Stephanie and Yuji had helped me to transform. Being able to re-pattern my emotional response to situations, I had experience the joy of living my life on a whole new level. The benefit of my sessions extended beyond issues I had brought them at my first eight sessions. The techniques I had learned at Spiral Movement Centre had sparkled my interest on the infinite potential and capability of my bodymind, and I am looking forward to learning more of what it can bring to my daily wellbeing.

I came across the term "somatic" when I was researching for the holy grail of stretching techniques. You see, my thigh muscle, my hamstring muscle, my inner thigh muscle, pretty much all my leg muscles needed to be stretched out in order to get my knees to bend past 90 degrees (a story for another time????). The Spiral Movement Center came up on the first page of my Google results but they weren't the first place called! Nope, I called a few other places first cause they were closer to home; none of which got back to me ????. I firmly believe all things happen for a reason and in the end I'm very glad and grateful I ended up at the Spiral Movement Center.

I met Yuji and Stephanie, two very warm and welcoming individuals, for my initial assessment session. They asked as many questions as they needed in order to get a good idea of how I arrived to this point in my life where I felt I needed their help.

What happened over the next 90 minutes is what made me decide that this is where I need to be to get the results I needed. Stephanie began doing a shake out of all my limbs in order to help me relax while Yuji, in a very calming tone would guide me into a deeper state of relaxation. What does this have to do with stretching you ask? Well, even I myself did not even consider how important it was to relax the body in order to get the most benefit when the stretching routine began. But it is an integral part of the process and something that both Yuji and Stephanie impressed upon me.

Once the relaxation part was completed then began the work of passively seeing where my range stood. The entire session was devoted to establishing a baseline and a sense of whether or not the techniques used by Yuji and Stephanie would work for my rehabilitation.

I proceeded on an 8 session journey over the course of 4 weeks. Each session progress was made. Don't get me wrong, I had homework after every session and doing this work on my own time was very important in ensuring continued successes after each session.

Did I find the holy grail of stretching techniques (hint: no such thing) that would help me reach my goal of being able to do a complete and proper squat ... No... But do I have the tools to get there now... Absolutely yes!!!

I highly recommend this duo for all your stretching and physiotherapy (PT) needs. Where conventional PT fails they may very well be the breakthrough your body needs in achieving its rehabilitation needs.
