Love this spot
interesting museum shop in Grant Etang on the Cabot trail. we dropped in as there is a little harbour here with lobster boats and a great view on the beach. we happened on this building and outside was some mannequins with handmade masks. when we went inside, we were surprised that it was actually a museum and not an ice cream shop like we thought, and the pleasant woman at the desk explained the concept of mi-careme which was invented because people in the area didn't want to observe the entire Lent as it was too long to avoid their favorite foods, so Mi-careme is halfway through lent and lasts for a week and allows the proponents to eat chocolate and sugar during that period so long as they wear masks. it is more involved than that as the partygoers spend the week going from house to house like trick or treating, but in their masks and outfits and it is incumbent on hosts to serve foods and entertain guests during this period. apparently a busy time. it is both quaint and macabre when you look at the photos of the parties. the museum is actually a very good resource for this religous event and seems observed by those of the Acadian ethnicity. would come back for another visit.
Such an interesting place! The lady working here was very informative. The displays and artifacts are very interesting and well done. We didn't know anything about this place or the holiday and loved learning about it. They also have a back art room where you can paint masks, rocks, driftwood, etc. Lots of handmade items in the gift shop.
This cultural mecca is so full of fun, quirkiness and cultural history. This was our 2nd time there and we love it! It has amazing displays of Masks and gifts for yourself or others which are one of a kind and very unique. You can also buy plain masks to put your own creative touch to. You may even get to meet the artist!
Incredible! Beautiful museum of masks from the Acadian tradition of Mi-Careme. Everyone is so helpful and knowledgeable. It has a gift shop and an area where kids can make their own mask. This is definitely recommended if your in the area.
