    In 1861 papst waz leadin a surveyin party markin a road between sandy beach n sebewaing bout halfway from deez 2townz legend sayz dey found a old axe head stuck in a tree where dey encamped 4da nite@a old hunterz cabin dey named diz place bad axe camp. legend sayz papst cut a slab of wood n wrote bad axe on it n nailed it 2 a tree where so00on a settlement would b started n l8r established into a city 4ever known now az BADAXE. With the outbreak of civil war in april 1861 papst n many other canadianz from diz area of michigan enlisted on oct 25, 1861. papst enlisted in 10th michigan az a private thru da yrz of war papst would b promoted many tymz on may 8,1865 papst waz promoted to captain of G company an 10th michigan served in western theater of war n saw action @siege of chattanooga, shermanz atlanta campaign n march 2da sea n shermanz march thru carolinaz an battle of bentonville.
