Excellent customer service. Took the time I needed on the phone to understand the policy. Website is really great and easy to,navigate to find info and find a price that worked for me. I haven’t had to submit a claim (thankfully) but am confident that it will be a smooth process.
Beware of the "hidden" costs. Trupanion in Canada does not cover sale taxes and examinations. Well, every visit for an emergency procedure is guaranteed to result in both, so those costs add up considerably. If you consider this, your deductible just went up by roughly $150 (cost of an emerg consult) and your co-insurance went up from 10% to 23% because of the addition of 13% sales tax.
On my recent claim (broken paw for a cat) the total of the bill for surgery was $3,875. Trupanion excluded the sale taxes of $445, and emergency consultation of $145. To me, it makes absolutely no sense to exclude these items from claimable expenses. They are absolutely unavoidable and arise from the incident leading to the claim, so why on Earth are they excluded?
On the positive side, I think that the ability to choose any deductible amount is nice. Also, the claim was processed in about a week, and they claim to have transferred the payment.
Overall, I think that excluding sales tax may be a deal breaker for me, since it can be such a sizable expense. Other insurances I looked at don't exclude sales tax or emergency exams. I'm going to shop around and see what else is out there.
